Best time to visit

The weather in Cambodia is quite similar to Vietnam, so you can travel at any time of the year. However, the climate here might be hotter, so avoid summer months.

Preparation

You should buy the book: Cambodia from Lonely Planet. This book will give you all the information you need to know about a trip to Cambodia such as: hotel info, restaurants, attractions, and fare for each attractions.

Transportation

There are many car carriers operating routes from Ho Chi Minh City to Cambodia. Mai Linh, Sapaco, Mekong Express or some Cambodian companies (on Pham Ngu Lao Street) sell tickets to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh.

If you are planning to visit Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, to save the cost and travelling time, you should book ticket twice: Saigon – Siem Reap ($14), Siem Reap – Phnom Penh ($7). You can follow this route for three days but it is quite rush, you will mostly spend your time … on cars. Thus, it is recommended to spend at least 4 days for this itinerary, your trip will be more relaxing and comfortable.

Another interesting way is onboard a cruise from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Travel time is about 5 hours, fares from $22 to $25.

If you like Sihanoukville, you can add your itinerary in the order of Saigon - Sihanoukville - Phnom Penh - Siem Reap - Saigon. From Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh takes about 5 hours, fare is 10-15 USD. This route should also last at least 4 days 3 nights.

In cities in Cambodia, you can go by tuk tuk for sightseeing. Or if you want to explore yourself, you can rent bikes or motorbikes. However, the most popular public transport in Cambodia is tuk tuk, which is quite cheap, the distance of 3 to 4km costs about $1. You should bring a Cambodian map in case of need.

Currency

The official currency of Cambodia is Riel, or KHR for short. 1 USD = 1,127 KHR. Going to Cambodia using USD is the most convenient. Avoid changing from USD to Riel because there will be a lot of losses. If you go to Cambodia by road, you should change the money right at the border because when you return if you do not spend all, you can change back.

Accommodation

In Cambodia, the most popular accommodation is guest houses and hotels. If you are a budget traveler, stay at guest houses. Before you go, you should make some researching and book rooms in advance.

Luggage preparation

Because the weather in Cambodia is hot, it is advisable for you to prepare clothes. However, it should be noted that when visiting temples or sanctuaries, dress properly: long sleeve clothing with colar and pants over knees.

Some item needed for the trip:

+ Good shoes
